Figuring a Room's Area
A rectangular room is just length times width: 12 feet by 10 feet makes 120 square feet. Inches get converted first, so 6 inches counts as half a foot. A round rug or patio uses π × (distance across ÷ 2)², and a triangular corner is base × height ÷ 2. Nothing fancier than that.
Common room sizes at a glance
| Room | Square feet |
|---|---|
| 10 × 10 ft | 100 |
| 10 × 12 ft | 120 |
| 12 × 12 ft | 144 |
| 12 × 15 ft | 180 |
| 15 × 20 ft | 300 |
Yards, meters and buying material
Carpet often sells by the square yard: divide square feet by 9. Metric plans use square meters: multiply square feet by 0.0929. One habit that saves a second trip to the store: order a bit more material than the room measures, since cuts and mistakes eat into it. Many installers suggest around 10% extra, and the percentage calculator will tell you exactly what 10% on top of your total comes to.
Measure at the widest points of the room, and if a space is L-shaped, split it into two rectangles, add each one here, and let the running total do the adding.
